Battle over additional Regional Cities funding to continue this week

INDIANAPOLIS (WOWO): Republicans will try to salvage one of Governor Pence’s signature programs this week.

Legislators budgeted $84 million dollars for Pence’s Regional Cities Initiative, enough to fund coordinated development efforts in two regions of the state. But the House so far appears unwilling to allow another 42-million to cover three regions instead of two.

Some legislators are miffed that Pence announced a third recipient before getting the authorization for more money. And Speaker Brian Bosma says it’s harder to win over lawmakers whose regions weren’t selected.

Bosma says he’s working with Ways and Means Chairman Tim Brown this weekend on a revised proposal, but he’s not offering any hints to what form that might take, repeatedly answering reporters’ questions with, “We’ll see what happens Monday.”

The funding passed the Senate 35-15 with bipartisan support. President Pro Tem David Long says the state has the extra money available as the result of a tax amnesty which exceeded expectations, and says legislators should approve it. He says the program has already made significant inroads toward a long-elusive goal of encouraging regional development.

If the bill can’t pass Ways and Means, leaders may tuck the funding into another bill.
