State agency: Aqua Indiana’s proposed rate hike too high

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): A state utility consumer agency says Aqua Indiana needs to reduce its planned rate increase.

Aqua Indiana wants to raise its utility rates in the Fort Wayne area by almost 30 percent. However, the Office of Utility Consumer Counselor believes that’s too much, according to the Journal-Gazette.

It has reviewed the utility company’s request and have determined that they should limit their increase to about half that: 15.6 percent.

Aqua Indiana served over 13,000 customers in Allen, Huntington, and Whitley Counties. The increase for those customers would come in two phases.

Aqua Indiana has until July 19 to file a rebuttal. A hearing in front of the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission is scheduled to start Aug. 9.
