FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): Two more Fort Wayne officials are speaking out against a proposed rate hike for Aqua Indiana customers in Aboite Township.

Fort Wayne City Council member Jason Arp and State Representative Chris Judy of Fort Wayne have joined Senate President Pro Tem David Long in opposing Aqua Indiana’s request for a 29.8% increase in sewer rates, according to the Journal Gazette.

They say the request would hurt the older citizens in the township who can’t afford to pay for the hike, which would amount to an extra $13 to $20 per month for customers, as well as a new one-time fee of $1,300 for new customers joining the wastewater treatment system.

Aqua Indiana hasn’t asked for a rate increase since 2010, and the company says it’s needed to cover the cost of recent improvements.
