Waterloo Train Depot set to move down the street Wednesday

WATERLOO, Ind. (WOWO): A big piece of Waterloo’s history is getting ready to move.

The Waterloo Train Depot was built in 1884, but the entire building is changing its address next week. The historic building will be moved Wednesday morning to the southeast corner of Center and Van Vleek Streets. The time of the move will be announced Tuesday.

The reason for the move is to provide Amtrak customers an improved shelter while they wait for trains to arrive and leave.

More than 20,000 passengers use the Waterloo Amtrak station every year. The depot was renovated in 2010 and will feature more “modern conveniences” than the current “bus hut”.

The foundation where the depot will sit on is being worked on. Wolfe House and Building Movers will begin preparing for the move on Monday before the two block move down the road. The building will be supported above the foundation while utilities are reconnected before it settles onto its new foundation in mid-April.

The depot will be opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on June 24th. It will also feature a new paved parking lot, new sidewalks, street lighting, landscaping and curbs.
