State Rep. pitches raising workplace death payouts

INDIANAPOLIS (WOWO): A local lawmaker is trying to raise the amount that companies pay out in the event of a worker’s death on the job.

State Representative Martin Carbaugh has proposed an amendment to a worker’s compensation bill in the state’s House Labor Committee that would raise the funeral payout from $7,500 to $25,000.

He tells our Partners in News at ABC 21 he made the pitch because it’s been years since that figure was set, and argues that funerals these days can easily exceed that $7,500.

The committee could vote on the amendment next week.
