Probation for man convicted of conning elderly woman could be tossed

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): A man who pled guilty in 2011 to conning nearly a half-million dollars out of an elderly Allen County woman could see his probation go out the window.

54-year-old Jeffrey Smith got an 8-year prison sentence, but half of it was suspended and the other half to be served on probation, after he admitted to corrupt business influence by manipulating the woman over a period of five years. The Journal Gazette reports he was also supposed to pay back what he took, but his victim died before his plea deal was finalized.

Now probation officers want his probation revoked because he stopped paying, and still owes her estate more than $455,000.
