Pair of fires leave one dead

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): One person is dead after Fort Wayne Firefighters responded to two fires within an hour of each other overnight.

First, crews were called to the Woodview Manor Apartments on Timberhill Drive at 11:46pm Wednesday to a fire that was on the second floor of the building, extending onto the roof.

Nobody was in the apartment, and one pet was rescued as crews took care of the blaze. It was under control in just 17 minutes but a complete overhaul of the building took several hours.

Then at 12:11am Thursday, firefighters were called to a house at 2337 Elyetta Street, a couple of blocks southeast of Lindley Elementary School, for a fire that rapidly spread throughout the house and through the roof.

Firefighters went on the defensive right away, keeping the flames from spreading to neighboring homes. Power lines fell due to the fire, causing portions of the home to be energized, and numerous small explosions occurred inside the home.

It took 33 minutes to bring the fire under control. A little over an hour later, a victim’s body was found inside the home. They have not yet been identified.

Both fires are under investigation.
