Omni Source suffers heavy fire damage

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): Just before 2:00 p.m. Friday afternoon, the Fort Wayne Fire Department responded to a report of a building fire at Omni Source, located at 2711 Taylor Street.  Upon arrival, fire fighters discovered a heavy fire in a bin that holds metal shavings and a roll off truck that was hauling them.  The fire was especially difficult to put out as the metal shavings were titanium which cannot be put out with water.  Fire fighters made sure anyone in the truck was safe and in the building next to it, which had also caught fire.  The building was evacuated and the fire in the building was extinguished.  The fire in the bin and the truck had to wait until they could locate something like dry sand to put on it.  Firefighters made sure all drains were blocked so no run off from anything could get into them.  The fire is now covered in sand however a fire watch was set up as the fire will continue to burn for a while.  No injuries have been reported at this time.   Agencies involved in the fire were, the Fort Wayne Fire Department, Homeland Security and Three Rivers Ambulance Authority.
