Albion Police received a 911 call on Nov. 1 at around 7:20 a.m. in regards to an unresponsive child. Railee Ewing was taken to Parkview Noble Hospital, where she was pronounced dead about a half hour later. Medical officials reported signs of possible abuse, with significant bruising.

Officials say Wert was babysitting Railee on Oct. 31, and believe her injuries occurred during that that time. Wert was questioned by Noble County deputies and admitted to battering the child after becoming angry with her.

An autopsy completed Friday afternoon by the Noble County Coroner’s Office ruled Ewing’s death was caused by multiple blunt force traumatic injuries and ruled her death a homicide.

Wert is due in court Monday afternoon for his initial hearing.
