KOSCIUSKO COUNTY, Ind. (WOWO): Detectives from the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department are warning residents of a telephone scam that appears to have resurfaced from last year.

Deputies have received various reports of people being contacted by individuals via telephone that are portraying themselves as either being officers or someone with the court system. They’re even known to use the names of actual police officers, as well as court officials.

The suspected caller presumably attempts to deceive the caller by saying they have some type of outstanding court cost/fines.  Or, they claim a court date has been missed and they say a warrant will be issued for their arrest.  The suspects then provide a “solution,” suggesting the victim obtain a pre-paid credit card in the amount of the fictitious fine.

Kosciusko County Chief Deputy Rocky Goshert advises that neither the county court system, nor the sheriff’s department, contact individuals over the telephone regarding such matters.  Any such payments for court cost/fines/warrants MUST be made in person at the Kosciusko County Justice Building.

If contacted, detectives are advising the public to simply hang-up, or call police to report the incident.
