Indiana House passes bill abolishing handgun permits

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Network Indiana): The Indiana House has voted to let you carry a gun without a permit.

On a near party-line vote, the House voted 63-29 to join 21 states which have abolished permit requirements to carry handguns. Auburn Representative Ben Smaltz (R) argues permit requirements don’t stop criminals from getting guns, while law-abiding citizens shouldn’t need a permit for a constitutional right.

Indiana repealed the application fee for a permit last year under the same reasoning.

Instead of a permit that says you can carry legally, the bill takes the list of people who would be denied a permit under the current law, and makes it a misdemeanor if they’re caught carrying a gun. That list includes felons, people convicted of domestic violence or stalking, fugitives, minors, illegal immigrants, the mentally ill, people under indictment, and people dishonorably discharged from the military.

Opponents argue it’ll be hard for police to figure that out, while it’s easy to determine whether someone has a permit. Indianapolis Representative Mitch Gore (D), a Marion County sheriff’s deputy, says police need as much information as they can get when they pull someone over, and knowing someone is likely to have a gun is a key piece of data they’ll no longer have.

It’s the second straight year the House has voted to get rid of gun permits — last year’s bill didn’t get a vote in the Senate.

While permits wouldn’t be required under the bill, you could still apply for one if you expect to need it to travel to a state which does have a permit requirement.

The laws against prohibited people keeping or bearing arms are not changed. The laws about self defense are not changing. The laws against murder or other violet crimes are not changing. Handgun licenses are not being abolished. Current licenses will continue to be issues for those who wish to travel outside the state. in the 21 states that have Constitutional carry NONE of the Chicken Little blood in the streets have happened. Think! Criminals are already carrying firearms ILLEGALLY. They will not be effected by this law one little bit. Police officers will still have to determine if they are dealing with an armed criminal or not if the new law passes or not. Stop conflating the law-abiding gun owner with the criminals. Yes they both carry guns. But what do they do with them?? Only the Law-Abiding will be legally protecting themselves as the Constitution envisioned.

good — next get rid of marriage licenses and all other “licenses” for activities that the state has no business being involved with

Glad to see we are going back to the constitution. It was written to protect the people and the freedoms. The further away we pull from it the less freedoms people have. Don’t put someone in a cage and expect them to live a happy and fulfilling life. Also, good people make bad choices too and bad people change into good people. So enough of the controlling excuses.

When they ask for your driver’s license and your registration they run your name to see if you’re a felon or not Or if you have any warrants against you that should tell them right there

I think you should half to have a permit they should be free. The problem I have with every body being adel to car a gun is people want be cowboys you go to eat and there’s some dumb ass sitting in a chair with a gun hanging out in the open. Now what do you think is going to happen if a person comes in to rob the place the first thing he’s going to do is shot the guy with a gun hanging out his ass. Or cowboy is going to jump up and start shooting and chances are some one is going to get shoot that had nothing to do with it. I think every one should have to take a course on how to handle a hand gun be for they can carry one. I don’t have any thing again people who are not the brightest in the world. BUT THERE IS JUST SOME PEOPLE Who ARE NOT SMART ENUFF TO CARRY A GUN. Not people who are mentally ill but JUST DUMB ASS that don’t need to carry a gun. Most families now how they are and should report that person and police should be aloud to stop that person from being armed. I sorry if offend any one but that’s my opinion on people carrying guns.

There is no duty to inform law enforcement under Indiana code 35.47.2.1, so they would not know if they pull you over.

Guns don’t kill people. It’s the person behind the gun that is in question. Obviously permits and crap like that doesn’t work. All we are trying to do is level the playing field for people who are not criminals. Look, gun control doesn’t work. It’s a false sense of security. Crooks don’t abide by laws why should honest, hard working people have to jump through hoops?
