INDIANAPOLIS (AP): Indiana health officials are urging outdoor enthusiasts to protect themselves from ticks spreading infectious diseases.

State public health veterinarian Jennifer Brown says those spending time in grassy or wooded areas should wear long-sleeve shirts that are tucked in at the waist. They should also tuck their pants into their socks and wear insect repellents containing DEET.

Brown says there are already reports of tick activity across the state. She says last year there were 200 reports of infectious diseases caused by ticks.

The tiny insect-like creatures can be found throughout the state. They can spread diseases including Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever.
