JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (AP): A southern Indiana church is facing criticism for seeking prayers for its late former head pastor, who had faced child molestation allegations.

The Courier-Journal of Louisville, Kentucky, reports that First Christian Church’s youth minister sent a statement after David James Brown’s death seeking prayers for Brown’s family and the Jeffersonville congregation.

David Clohessy, director of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, says that’s “stunningly callous” and prayers should have been sought for those Brown may have abused.

Brown was arrested in June after police said he traveled to Kentucky to meet a minor. He was charged with one count of prohibited use of an electronic communication system for the purpose of procuring a minor for a sex offense.

Police say Brown died last week of an apparent suicide.
