Fort Wayne infant mortality among highest in Indiana

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): Two Fort Wayne zip codes have infant mortality rates that are among the highest in the state.

The Fort Wayne Urban League hosted a roundtable that included healthcare and social service experts, plus Congressman Jim Banks, Wednesday.

In the 46806 zip code, which encompasses the southeast side of town, the mortality rate is 14.3 deaths per 1,000 live births. The News-Sentinel reports that puts it at third in the state. The 46805 zip code is 10th in the state. The numbers are even more distressing when breaking them down by race, with black children in Fort Wayne having a mortality rate more than twice as high as with white babies.

The roundtable led to recommendations like increasing and improving mental health screenings for pregnant women, providing education on safe sleep practices for newborns and new mothers, and better prenatal and food education efforts.

The stats also pointed out that a large number of infant deaths were in cases where the pregnancy was unwanted, leading to suggestions that local officials try to figure out ways to address unwanted or unplanned pregnancies.
