Crane placed to bring historic General Electric sign down

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): The iconic GE symbol in Fort Wayne is coming down.

A large red crane has been placed at the site of the General Electric sign this week, ready to take the sign down. A listener tells us that crews are working with power tools on the roof to remove the sign from the steel framework it’s been attached to for decades.

Power to the blue and white sign was turned off last year, and vandals have forced GE to remove the sign from the top of the building at its former campus. It will be stored on-site.

Discussions continue to take place over what to do with the former GE campus on Broadway.
