Blizzard batters northwest Indiana with over foot of snow

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP): Northwest Indiana bore the brunt of a winter storm that left as much as 15 inches of snow in places and caused mass flight cancellations at the region’s air hub in Chicago.

The National Weather Service says the highest snow totals were in Indiana’s Lake and Porter counties, where the storm dumped over a foot of snow. Authorities declared a state of emergency there and in Newton County. Emergency crews spent the night assisting stranded drivers, and even by Thursday morning some of the region’s interstates were moving at a crawl. Many schools were canceled.

South Shore trains between Indiana and Chicago were suspended Thursday because the storm knocked out power to railroad crossing gates.

The highest recorded wind gusts hit 60 mph during Wednesday’s blizzard.
