FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): Some local schools are getting in front of a planned nationwide classroom walk-out next week over gun violence.

It’s called “March for our Lives” and is set for March 14th at 10am, with student groups calling for an organized walk-out to demand tighter gun control measures and an end to school shootings.

Krista Stockman of Fort Wayne Community Schools tells our Partners in News at ABC 21 district officials are encouraging students to work with principals to make their voices heard within school buildings.

“We (can) use this as a teaching moment, to talk about civil discourse, ways you can have an opinion, share an opinion.”

Stockman says FWCS students are expected to be at school, however, as they’ll be marked down with an unexcused absence if they walk out or just don’t show up for classes in the first place.

Northwest Allen County Schools are taking similar measures, with officials saying that students that either walk out or don’t show up will be marked as “truant.”
