FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): The City of Fort Wayne will celebrate its namesake this summer.

The City Council approved a resolution declaring July 16th as General “Mad” Anthony Wayne Day on a 6-3 vote Tuesday. City Councilman Jason Arp, who proposed the idea, says that day is the anniversary of the Battle of Stony Point during the Revolutionary War.

“Wayne led a midnight raid, bayonets only, to conquer the British at Stony Point to allow George Washington and his entourage to escape, to live to fight another day.”

Councilman Glynn Hines voted against it, citing mistreatment of Native Americans by the US government in that time period. Councilmen John Crawford and Russ Jehl also voted “no.” All three turned down interview requests.
