ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. (WOWO): Local fire and police departments will be able to save more lives thanks to a grant from a woman who lost her son to a heroin overdose.

Fort Wayne, Allen County and New Haven Police departments and the Fort Wayne fire department received narcan kits on Monday, according to our news partners at 21Alive.

The departments also went through a 45-minute training seminar on how to administer the drug.

The donation of the kits, which help reverse the effects of opioid drugs, came from Justin Phillips. The mother of three lost her 20-year-old son in 2013 to a heroin overdose.

“An addiction, unfortunately, is a chronic disease just like cancer and diabetes,” Phillips told 21Alive. “So part of my mission is to … allow people to speak up.”

In Allen County, 54 people died in 2015 because of an opioid overdose, according to the Fort Wayne Allen county department of health.
