NATIONWIDE, (WOWO) – June 14 is National Flag Day. How much do you know about the holiday? WOWO has compiled several facts about Flag Day, the American flag’s origins, and more.

1. The American flag’s original design lasted from 1777 to 1795.
2. Flag Day celebrates the day the nation adopted the American flag in the First Flag Act. The date is marked June 14, 1777.
3. The First Flag Act declares the flag has, “13 stripes alternate red and white: that the union of thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.”
4. The 13 stripes on the American flag represent the 13 colonies, and the 50 stars represent the 50 states in the Union.
5. The American flag isn’t the only thing celebrated on June 14. The date also holds a great significance to the U.S. Army., as it was founded on June 14 just two years prior to the flag’s adoption.
6. Although nationwide, Flag Day is not a federal holiday because it was left out of the 1986 Uniform Holiday Act. This act established the 11 official federal holidays and three-day weekend holidays nationwide.
7. The current star pattern was designed in 1958 by a 16-year-old student named Robert G. Heft. The design was submitted as a history project, but was later sent to Congress and accepted by President Eisenhower himself.
8. Flag Day wasn’t celebrated for nearly 100 years after the First Flag Act was established.
9. Bernard Cigrant is regarded as the “Father of Flag Day” due to his article “The Fourteenth of June” in the Chicago Argus newspaper. He was the first to propose the flag be observed each year.
10. Pennsylvania was the first state to celebrate Flag Day as a state holiday in 1937.
11. Nicknames of the flag include, “Old Glory,” “Star-Spangled Banner,” “Red, White and Blue,” and “Stars and Stripes.”
