FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): A woman is dead after being shot in the face in Fort Wayne on Wednesday night.

Fort Wayne Police Department officers were called to a home on Gay Street near the Allen County Public Library’s Pontiac Branch a few minutes before 11 p.m. When officers arrived, they found a woman in the street, suffering from a gunshot wound. She later died at a local hospital, according to FWPD spokesman Michael Joyner.

Officers say she appeared to be standing in the street when she was shot, but it’s not clear yet what led to shots being fired or even if she was the intended target.

Police are asking anyone who knows what happened to come forward, either by calling them or by reporting anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
