FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): There’s a showdown looming between Northwest Allen County Schools and the City of Fort Wayne.

The school’s board announced at a meeting last night that if the City’s proposed North IV annexation passes, the district will have no choice but to eliminate school bus transportation for students, according to 21Alive.

District officials say the annexation would end up costing the district about $2.5-million, on top of their projected property tax cap losses of $1.9-million this year already, amounting to half of their $8-million budget.

Superintendent Chris Himsel says if the annexation moves forward, the district will have “no other choice.” He adds Mayor Tom Henry suggested the district pass a referendum to pay for bus services, but the board didn’t feel that was the right thing to do.

Both Fort Wayne Community Schools and East Allen County Schools have also said they’ll be hurt by the plan.

The Fort Wayne City Council votes on the annexation Fiscal Plan tonight.
