ISTEP replacement panel divided over offering specific plan

INDIANAPOLIS (AP): The leader of a state committee is hesitant to make specific recommendations for replacing Indiana’s much-maligned ISTEP student test even though some members say that’s exactly what is needed.

The divide within the ISTEP replacement committee comes as the board has just a few weeks left to make recommendations to state legislators for revamping the state’s standardized exams. The tests are taken by more than 400,000 students a year.

Committee chairwoman Nicole Fama told members Tuesday she would work with their suggestions and draft a proposal ahead of their Nov. 29 meeting. Fama says those recommendations will be broad for legislators to work with as they decide on an ISTEP replacement.

Committee member Scot Croner of the Blackford County schools maintains lawmakers should get a detailed plan.
