Fort Wayne Public Safety Director position survives elimination talk

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): It’s at least a brief victory for Mayor Tom Henry and Fort Wayne Public Safety Director Rusty York.

After Mayor Henry’s administration threatened a lawsuit if the Council went through with plans to cut York’s position, the Council tabled a move to cut York’s position Tuesday night. Henry had said such a move outside of budget hearings would be illegal, and the Journal Gazette reported that the city’s Police and Fire Chiefs both spoke on York’s behalf, saying he’s made a big impact on their departments.

The debate will most likely come back up during budget talks in October, and the city’s Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association told WOWO news in an email statement they’re asking the Council to eliminate York’s job.
