Zoeller Proposes New Consumer Protection Laws

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): A new wave of legislation looks to give teeth to the Indiana Attorney General's consumer protection efforts.

During a Monday visit to Fort Wayne, Attorney General Greg Zoeller joined with Majorie Stephens of the Better Business Bureau of Northeast Indiana. They are unveiling proposals to beef up laws for Home repair and construction fraud, debt collection issues and protection for the disabled and veterans.

Zoeller says scam artists posing as contractors prey on homeowners. He wants a voluntary registration system to document reputable companies.

He's also asking for laws that require debt collectors to identify themselves and disclose where the debt originated.

Other laws would seek stiffer penalties for those who target veterans, the disabled and the spouses of deceased vets and the disabled.
