WOWO Radio is proud to announce Turnstone
as the 2013 Penny Pitch charity

About Turnstone:  Turnstone’s Mission & Services:Founded in 1943, Turnstone has helped people with disabilities maximize their independence. The agency’s mission is to provide therapeutic, educational, wellness and recreational programs to empower people with disabilities. Turnstone is the only not-for-profit in northeast Indiana that offers a full range of programs and facilities designed to meet the unique needs of people with disabilities. Programs and services Turnstone provides that enhance the lives of people with disabilities include – therapeutic intervention, early education and childcare, health and wellness, sports and recreation, adult day services and residential ramp building.

Many of Turnstone’s services are unduplicated, and, as a result, the agency is a sought after provider throughout the region. Without our services, adults with disabilities would have limited social outlets, be dependent on their families or face premature placement in a nursing facility. Children with disabilities would not gain the independence necessary to function in a school setting, nor the skills needed to grow into independent adults.

Turnstone is requesting support from the WOWO Penny Pitch for the agency’s Residential Ramp Building program. The ramp program utilizes dedicated volunteers to construct wheelchair access ramps at the homes of people with disabilities. Turnstone’s residential ramp building program began in 1989, and over the course of 24 years, 1,200 residential ramps have been built for people with disabilities living in Allen County. Last year, Turnstone built 31 ramps for people in need, but more could be built each year if funding were available.
