FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): Officials with Fort Wayne's filtration plant say they are making progress in removing the odor from the water.

The smell, is a higher than usual concentration of chlorine. With a slower than usual rate of ice melt on the rivers it's creating more odor in the water coming into the facility.

So they are adding more chlorine into the water. And with slower flow, that translates to less dissipation of the chemical.

Vicky Zehr, the water quality chemist says the issue is not a safety concern, but an aesthetic one.

It's also a process that takes some time, with 14 hundred miles of pipes and more than 35 million gallons of water flowing throw the plant everyday, there's a lot to get to.

They are making progress however, the levels of chlorine — and accompanying smell are going down.

By the weekend, the water should be odor-free.
