Woman in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): The Fort Wayne Police Department responded to reports of a woman being struck by a vehicle on the corner of St. Joe Rd. and Canterbury Blvd. around 6:11 p.m. on Friday evening.  Upon arrival they found a woman trapped underneath a Pontiac Vibe.  Witnesses at the scene tried to lift the vehicle off of the woman and were then finally able to free her with the assistance of the Fort Wayne Fire Department.

Information suggests that an adult female driver of a Pontiac Vibe was stopped at the light on the corner of St. Joe Rd. and Canterbury Blvd. with the intention of exiting Canterbury Green Apartments and turning southbound on St. Joe Road.  Once the light turned green for the woman driver, she proceeded to turn right when a woman started to cross St. Joe Rd. from the southwest corner of the road and was struck by the woman turning right and dragged the woman underneath her car for several feet before finally stopping.  The driver stated that she did not see the pedestrian attempting to cross the road.

The driver was not injured and the woman that was hit is in critical condition.  The Southbound lane on St. Joe Road remained closed so that crime scene investigators and detectives can process the scene.  Investigators do not believe that speed or alcohol was a factor.  Police ask to please contact them if anyone witnessed the incident.
