Woman Arrested for Leaving 9-Month-Old in Fort Wayne Hotel, Speaking Out

KOSCIUSKO COUNTY, Ind. (WOWO): A Michiana mother, police say they found asleep behind the wheel of her van at a Pierceton gas station with meth, marijuana and heroin, is speaking out.

It was back in December, when 21-year Rachel Stevens was awoken by authorities. During the investigation, police discovered Stevens had left her 9-month-old daughter in a hotel room in Fort Wayne, but Stevens couldn’t identify the person she left the child with.

Police say it took them over 17 hours to recover the little girl and place her in the care of Child Services. However, ABC-57 News says, Stevens is speaking out.

At that point in time, I did what I thought was right and I don't care who tells me how much of a bad mother I am because I'm not. I don't regret it happening,” said Stevens. “I regret the people that I’ve hurt through it, but I had to hit complete rock bottom to come back up.”

Stevens is facing multiple charges and is due back in court Thursday in Kosciusko County.

ABC-57 reports that Stevens says she's trying to mend herself after years of abusing meth, something she says she gave up at the turn of the year.
