Woman Accused of Stealing $10K From oParks Department

VINCENNES, Ind. (AP): A southwestern Indiana woman faces theft charges for allegedly stealing nearly $10,000 from the Knox County Parks Department.

A State Board of Accounts audit performed last fall but released this week accuses 25-year-old Amberly Pennell of taking just over $9,800 while working in the Knox County Parks Department office during the first half of 2014.

Pennell was arrested in March on felony theft charges and has since posted a $5,000 bond.

The Vincennes woman faces an Aug. 18 trial.

The county parks superintendent discovered discrepancies with the department's cash balance and receipts last year, leading to the state audit.

Parks board president Troy Hinkle says the department has taken steps to provide the agency's accounts with more checks and balances.
