Quiet weather will continue today, but a strong storm system will take shape across lower Mississippi Valley this evening. This system will quickly lift northward tonight and Wednesday allowing rain to overspread much of the area late tonight into Wednesday. Precipitation may begin as a brief period of sleet or freezing rain, mainly north of Highway 24 late tonight into early Wednesday morning.

As this system approaches, rain will change to snow from west to east on Wednesday with periods of moderate to heavy snowfall possible from Wednesday afternoon through Wednesday night. Snow will continue into Thursday but will gradually diminish in intensity.

Storm total snowfall accumulations of 4 to 8 inches are possible across the winter storm watch area by Thursday afternoon. In addition, northeast winds will increase to 20 to 30 mph on Wednesday and will then shift to the northwest Wednesday night into Thursday. Gusts to 35 to 40 mph will be possible Wednesday night and Thursday resulting in blowing and snow and reduced visibility.

Anyone planning travel across the region Wednesday and Thursday should keep up on the latest forecasts regarding this potential winter storm.
