Wigwam on borrowed time, needs ‘white knight’

ANDERSON, Ind. (AP): The iconic Anderson gymnasium known as the Wigwam is deteriorating, and school officials say they could be forced to make a decision about its future unless a “white knight'' appears with a plan to preserve it.

The building's roof has five years or less of life and that vandals have broken in twice in recent weeks.

Anderson Community Schools Superintendent Felix Chow says the district hasn't received any solid proposals in writing, but city officials say there is interest from local, regional and national groups in reusing the building.

Chow says the roof dates from the gym's opening in 1961 and could collapse in a heavy snowstorm.

Fire Chief Phil Rogers says the building is a safety hazard.
