VA official: Fort Wayne clinic will remain open

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP): The Veterans Affairs' regional chief says Fort Wayne's VA Medical Center will remain open even if its intensive care unit never reopens.

VA Northern Indiana Health Care System director Denise Deitzen says some veterans are worried the clinic might close in the wake of a VA inspector general report questioning whether the hospital's intensive care unit should be restarted.

Deitzen says the inspectors general's report included no suggestion that the medical center should close.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs suspended the medical center's inpatient services and its intensive care unit last October to review processes and provide more training to staff there.

VA officials have been restoring inpatient care in phases since that time.
