INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WOWO):  The story of the U.S.S. Indianapolis will be told on the big screen for the first time.

On July 30, 1945, the ship was transporting the worlds first operational atomic bomb and was hit by two torpedoes from a Japanese submarine.  About 900 of the 1,196 aboard made it to the water alive.

After the ship sunk, the survivors used life jackets and a few rafts to stay alive.  However it took 5 days before help would arrive.  During that time, the sailors had to survive what the Smithsonian calls the Worst Shark Attack in History.

Of the 900 who initially survived, only 316 men were rescued.

The film stars Nicholas Cage who plays Captain McVay, Tom Sizemore who plays McWhorter, and Thomas Jane who plays Adrian Marks.

The full movie is expected to be released on May 27.  The first full trailer has been released with fairly good reaction.
