FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): Officials with the University of Saint Francis issued the following statement about the USF Lady Cougars celebrating their National Championship with a rally:

The University of Saint Francis will celebrate the undefeated season and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Division II national championship of its women’s basketball team with a pep rally at Hutzell Athletic Center tonight when the players return from Sioux City, Iowa. The estimated return is between 8 and 9 p.m.

The Lady Cougars became the first NAIA Division II team with a perfect season since 2009 with their 75-68 win over Lake of the Ozarks Tuesday night in Sioux City, Iowa.

Senior guard Skylarr Shurn scored 30 points on her way to earning the NAIA Championship Most Valuable Player Award. USF’s Brooke Ridley was named to the all-championship first team, and senior teammate Jenelle Wilson was named to the all-championship second team. Coach Gary Williams picked up the Phyllis Holmes Coach of the Year Award.

“Our team’s achievement is truly inspirational, not only for the perfect record and winning the NAIA Division II national tournament, but also for the integrity, perseverance and grace that they have consistently demonstrated throughout the season,” said USF Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. J. Andrew Prall. “Our students continue to inspire us to do our best today and every day in our common goal of providing the best possible education for all of our students in our Catholic and Franciscan tradition.”
