US tank landing ship prepares to depart Evansville

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP): A restored World War II landing ship is set to depart Evansville this weekend for its annual summer fundraising cruise.

The USS LST Ship Memorial will leave its home port Sunday on the Ohio River and make stops in Decatur, Alabama, and Chattanooga, Tennessee, during a three-week journey. It's expected to return to Evansville on Sept. 21.

The trip is part of the USS LST Ship Memorial Board's mission to honor veterans who served aboard the ship during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War by maintaining it as a moveable museum. The board says visits to river port cities are an important source of revenue for the ship.

The public is invited to watch the ship depart and arrive at Marina Pointe in Evansville.
