UPDATED: Garbage Truck Operator Dies in Steuben County Accident

UPDATED: The garbage truck driver has been identified as 52 year old Thomas Phelps of Angola.

ANGOLA, Ind. (WOWO): A garbage truck driver is dead following an accident Thursday morning in Steuben County. 

Steuben County authorities say the driver of the truck got out of the vehicle for garbage pickup on US 20 east of County Road 800 West at about 7:30 a.m. 

A semi being driven by 56 year old John Winters of Findlay, Ohio sideswiped the truck while the driver was standing on the passenger's side of the truck. 

The driver was flown to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne, later dying during surgery from internal and external injuries. 

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor and the incident remains under investigation. No charges have been filed against Winters.
