FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): Firefighters tackled a structure fire east of downtown Tuesday morning and remained at the scene well into the afternoon.

Around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, units were sent to Felician Street, just off Coliseum Blvd.  That's directly across from the former International Harvester complex.

Assistant Fire Chief Paul Veldman told WOWO News, units initially entered the building but took a defensive, containment strategy.

They were back in the building about 30 minutes later. The fire was brought under control in about an hour, but the building suffered heavy damage.

No one was injured by the fire. The cause remains under investigation.

The building was described by witnesses as a rental hall of sorts where birthday parties and wedding receptions were held.

Traffic on Coliseum and Pontiac was diverted while crews fought the fire.

Dozens of firefighters and numerous fire trucks including ladder trucks and engines assisted at the scene.
