UPDATE: Police Involved In Shooting Outside Parkview Huntington Hospital

HUNTINGTON, Ind. (WOWO): Indiana State Police continue to investigate an incident that occurred late Friday night outside of Parkview Huntington Hospital which involved a police action shooting and left one Huntington man dead.

Officials say that around 10 p.m., a 911 call was made to police by 34-year-old Raul Martinez III, of Huntington. Martinez told dispatchers that he was transporting 18-year-old Destiny Shanks of Fort Wayne to the Parkview Huntington Hospital emergency room with gunshots to both of her legs. As a result of further conversation with Martinez, Parkview Huntington immediately went into lockdown and officers from the Huntington Police Department were sent to meet the couple as they arrived.

Upon arriving in the drive outside of the emergency room doors, Martinez exited his vehicle and engaged the two Huntington Police officers with a nine millimeter handgun, firing at them repeatedly. The officers returned fire, hitting Martinez once in the hip, a non-fatal wound. Martinez then suffered a fatal wound as a result of a gunshot to the head. According to the Huntington County Coroner, all indications were that the fatal wound was self-inflicted. Shanks was flown to a Fort Wayne hospital. Her condition is not known at this time.

No one inside of the hospital was injured nor were any of the officers injured. Parkview Huntington released its lockdown and maintained routine medical service within a few hours of the incident. The identities of the officers involved are not being released at this time.
