UPDATE: Off-Duty Officer Killed in Crash with School Bus

WABASH, Ind. (AP) – Authorities say an off-duty police officer was killed when his SUV went out of control on a northern Indiana highway and slid into the path of a school bus loaded with children.

State police Sgt. Tony Slocum says none of the 39 children on the Wabash County schools bus needed hospitalization after Monday's crash on Indiana 15 a few miles south of the city of Wabash.

Slocum says 39-year-old North Manchester Officer David Rigney was driving his personal SUV when it apparently hit a slick spot on the highway and fishtailed. The SUV crossed into the bus' path and was hit at the driver's side door. The SUV was also hit by a car.

Rigney was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other drivers weren't injured.
