University of Saint Francis Bus Involved in Fatal Crash

HAMMOND, Ind. (AP) – Authorities say a Hammond man has died after grabbing the steering wheel of a car driven by his girlfriend during an argument and triggering a crash with a bus carrying a college football team.

The crash Saturday night on Interstates 80/94 in Hammond killed 21-year-old Joshua Walberg. Police say after he grabbed the steering wheel, 21-year-old Shawnna Popenhagen of Hammond overcorrected into the path of a bus carrying players, coaches and cheerleaders from the University of Saint Francis in Fort Wayne, returning from a game in Illinois.

Popenhagen was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Ill., with what police described as “incapacitating injuries.” The hospital isn't releasing information on her condition. She was wearing a seat belt but Walberg wasn't.

No one on the bus was injured.
