FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO) – United Way 2-1-1 will celebrate its 15th anniversary with an open house this Thursday.

2-1-1 is a national dialing code for free, confidential 24-hour access to health and human services, such as housing, shelter, food, legal aid, clothing, counseling, utility assistance, health care, transportation and more.

The resource and information referral center has been a part of the region since 2003.

“People contact 2-1-1 for many reasons,” said Jaimie Ferren, Director of 2-1-1 Services, in a press release. “Sometimes it’s because someone they care about is struggling or they want to become more involved in their community. Other times it’s because an unexpected life change has left them with questions about how to make it through.”

Since 2003, the Allen County center has answered more than half a million calls. An average of 40,000 calls are handled annually in Fort Wayne.

In 2017, a text feature was added, allowing people to text their zip code to 898-211 to text with a live Community Navigator.

In celebration of its 15th year in the county, an open house will take place at United Way of Allen County on Thursday, Nov. 15, from 1 to 5 p.m.
