FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): Three people escaped a fire in a ground-floor apartment at the Westwind Apartments in Fort Wayne Thursday night, but their pets weren’t as lucky.

The Fort Wayne Fire Department reports they were called to the apartments on Point West Drive at about 8:20pm. Some firefighters attacked the fire while others helped to search and evacuate the building.

One person was assisted down from a 3rd-floor balcony with a ladder truck. Another two people managed to get themselves out.

Two cats died in the fire. The American Red Cross is assisting those residents that were displaced by the blaze, which is still under investigation.
