Truckers pull Officer from Burning Squad Car

GARY, Ind. (AP): Northern Indiana police say truck drivers pulled a Gary police officer from his burning squad car following a crash along a highway overpass that injured the officer.

Gary Police Chief Wade Ingram tells The Times of Munster that passing truck drivers stopped and pulled the 26-year-old Officer Michael Mitchell from his squad car after Thursday night's fiery crash. Mitchell was taken to a local hospital with injuries to one of his legs.

The Lake County Sheriff's Department says Mitchell was southbound on an overpass over the Interstate 80-94 Borman Expressway when another motorist cut him off. His squad car then struck a curb and became engulfed in flames.

Lake County police spokeswoman Patti Van Til says the other driver fled the scene.
