Trouble in Toyland’s 2014 Dangerous Toys List

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WOWO): If you're kids are making a Christmas list this year, be sure to check it twice for potentially dangerous toys.

Some textured blocks, a Dora the Explorer Backpack and a Hello Kitty accessory set are among the toys on store shelves that contain potential hazards, that according to the U-S Public Interest Research Group's annual “Trouble in Toyland” report.

Pam Clough with the group says among the 24 toys on this year's list, they uncovered four main hazards: toxins, choking risks, magnets, and excessively noisy toys.

Clough says when it comes to the toxic hazards, the toxic chemicals found in some of the toys, like lead, chromium and phthalates, can have adverse health impacts on a child’s development.

“We found toys that contained phthalates that are well over the legal limits. For example, a Dora backpack was 20 percent phthalates, which is ridiculous,” Clough said.

Clough says the findings highlight the need for consumers to do their research before buying. She also says to help out this holiday season you should read some of the new warnings being listed on toys, that weren't listed last year.

However, the Toy Industry Association claims that he U-S Public Interest Research Group's past toy reports were based on improper testing methods that are not approved by the U-S Consumer Product Safety Commission.
