FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): More pets go missing on July 4 than any other day of the year and the city of Fort Wayne wants to help stop that from happening to local pets.

Pet Amber Alert says pets become frantic and run away during fireworks because they try to find a safe haven. Pets who haven’t ran away before might bolt through a screen door, jump a fence or dig under a gate to get away from loud explosions, according to Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control.

Animal Care and Control offers the following tips to help keep your pet safe during the holiday weekend.

  • Keep dogs inside the home or in a well-ventilated space when fireworks are going off in the area.
  • Cats should be kept inside at all times.
  • Have secured gates and supervise your animals while they are outside.
  • Be sure to keep a current identification tag on your pet’s collar. Fort Wayne Animal Care & Control is offering microchips for $15 with proof of rabies and a current I.D. and H.O.P.E.
  • for Animals is offering $10 microchips during the month of June.
  • Pets are prohibited from any parade or festival.

People are allowed to shoot off fireworks between 10 a.m. to midnight July 4.
