Thousands Of Digital Books Made Available To Students

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WOWO):  More digital books will be available for Hoosier students in 2016.

Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz announced Thursday that the Department of Education will provide free access to thousands of on-line books as part of an on-going literacy initiative called The Hoosier Family of Readers.  The books will be available through the myON Digital Library, both in English and Spanish.

“A reader is not someone who can read, rather a reader is someone who does read.  Providing students with access to thousands of online books supports the mission of the Indiana Department of Education: to provide every student with the resources they need to have an education of the highest quality,” said Ritz.

The books will be made available through the entire 2016 calendar year, starting on January 1st.  Students, families and educators will have access to over 5,000 free on-line books.  They hope that over 200,000 books will be read by December as a way to celebrate Indiana's Bicentennial in 2016.  During the summer of 2015, more than 45,000 books were read using myON.
