Thousands Expected For Services For Notre Dame’s Hesburgh

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) _ Thousands of students, alumni and admirers are expected on the University of Notre Dame campus to pay their respects to the Rev. Theodore Hesburgh, who served as the school's president for 35 years while also promoting human rights.

Visitation and an invitation-only wake are scheduled for Tuesday at the Sacred Heart Basilica on campus. On Wednesday, an invitation- only funeral and a tribute featuring former President Jimmy Carter, his wife, Rosalynn, and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is planned. Hesburgh died Thursday at age 97.

Hesburgh was Notre Dame's president from 1952 to 1987 but was perhaps more recognized for his work on behalf of major social issues such as civil rights, peaceful uses of atomic energy and Third World development. He held 16 presidential appointments.
