TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) – Officials in Terre Haute have closed a middle school gymnasium because bats were found in it.

Vigo County School Corp. director of facility support and transportation Franklin Fennell says Sarah Scott Middle School has “a bat issue.”

The (Terre Haute) Tribune-Star reports that a week before school started Tuesday, bats were spotted in the school’s gym. School officials closed the gym and found a company that specializes in bat removal.

The company has ordered supplies and expects to start work next week. The company will create a way for the bats to escape on their own because some may be protected species.

The doors to the gym now have black and yellow tape across them and signs that say “Do Not Use.”
