Teachers Carry on Legacy of Explosion Victim

GREENWOOD, Ind. (AP) — Colleagues of a teacher killed in an explosion in an Indianapolis neighborhood are carrying on her legacy of helping students.

Teachers at Greenwood’s Southwest Elementary School have taken over Jennifer Longworth’s annual project to knit hats and scarves for students in her second-grade class.

Art teacher Katie Webb tells the Daily Journal she didn’t like the idea of Longworth’s tradition stopping with the Nov. 10 blast that killed her and husband John Dion Longworth. So she asked teachers at Southwest and Greenwood’s other elementary schools to help make the gifts for Longworth’s students this year.

Two dozen teachers with varying levels of experience met recently to make the gifts. Others contributed yarn for the project.

Teachers say working on the project has helped them through their grief.
